James C Peterson is the R A Hope Professor of Theology and Ethics at McMaster Divinity College, Hamilton, Ontario. This book addresses many of the issues which have been raised by the study of the human genome and the possibilities of remedying genetic disorders. Peterson starts from a biblical point of view that God created the world and gave man the responsibility of caring for it. He argues that “shaping the world is part of the God-given mandate for human beings to share in the redemption and development of creation.” The use of technology, including genetics, is discussed together with the need to be aware of ways in which these tools can be misused.

The book is clearly written and takes account of much that has been published on the subject from Augustine to the present day. Where technical matters are introduced, it is in easily understood terms. There are footnotes giving sources quoted as well as useful indexes of authors, subjects and Scripture references. Anyone wanting help with forming a biblically based view of current trends in human development will find this book a valuable read.
