This latest book by Thomas Yoder Neufeld is a useful introduction to students and others coming new to Christian studies. An experienced lecturer at undergraduate and graduate levels in New Testament and peace/conflict studies and theology at ConradGrebelUniversityCollege at the University of Waterloo in Ontario, Yoder Neufeld presents a straightforward guide to the life of Jesus, taking on board recent studies, including established research on non-canonical texts. As a committed pastor and hospital and prison chaplain, he is able to engage with his readers in an approachable style, without overwhelming them, and he regularly provides lists of key terms and concepts. However, more advanced students or those who are not new to the faith will inevitably find gaps in his presentation.

What does appear strange is the almost total absence of references to standard European writings on Christianity, either in the text or the suggestions for further reading given at the end of each chapter. But the greatest and most obvious lack in a book of this nature is that of an index of scriptural references.
